Safety

The ID.4’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The VF 8 doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Volkswagen ID.4 are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The VinFast VF 8 doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

Both the ID.4 and VF 8 have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The ID.4 has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The VF 8’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

Both the ID.4 and VF 8 have rear cross-traffic warning, but the ID.4 has Rear Traffic Alert (automatically applies the brakes) to better prevent a collision when backing near traffic. The VF 8’s Rear Cross Traffic Alert doesn’t automatically brake.

Both the ID.4 and the VF 8 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

The Volkswagen ID.4 achieved a “Top Safety Pick” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for the 2024 model year. This recognition was based on its impressive performance in the small overlap frontal crash test, updated side impact crash test, headlight evaluations, and pedestrian crash prevention testing. The VF 8 has not yet been evaluated by the IIHS for 2024.

Warranty

Volkswagen pays for scheduled maintenance on the ID.4 for 2 years and 20,000 miles. Volkswagen will pay for tire rotations, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. VinFast doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the VF 8.

There are almost 162 times as many Volkswagen dealers as there are VinFast dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the ID.4’s warranty.

Engine

The ID.4 Pro’s optional electric motors produces 44 lbs.-ft. more torque (501 vs. 457) than the VF 8 Plus’ optional electric motors.

As tested in Car and Driver the ID.4 Pro electric motors is faster than the VF 8 Plus:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the ID.4 has larger standard tires than the VF 8 (235/55R19 vs. 225/55R19).

The ID.4 Pro S Plus’ 255/40R21 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the VF 8 Plus’ 45 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the ID.4 Pro S Plus has standard 21-inch wheels. The VF 8’s largest wheels are only 20-inches.

Suspension and Handling

For superior ride and handling, the Volkswagen ID.4 has fully independent front and rear suspensions. An independent suspension allows the wheels to follow the road at the best angle for gripping the pavement, without compromising ride comfort. The VinFast VF 8 has a rear torsion beam axle, with a semi-independent rear suspension.

The ID.4 Pro S AWD handles at .86 G’s, while the VF 8 Plus pulls only .84 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

For better maneuverability, the ID.4’s turning circle is 9.1 feet tighter than the VF 8’s (31.5 feet vs. 40.6 feet). The ID.4 AWD’s turning circle is 4.2 feet tighter than the VF 8’s (36.42 feet vs. 40.6 feet).

Chassis

The Volkswagen ID.4 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 700 to 1100 pounds less than the VinFast VF 8.

The ID.4 is 6.5 inches shorter than the VF 8, making the ID.4 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

For excellent aerodynamics, the ID.4 has standard flush composite headlights. The VF 8 has recessed headlights that spoil its aerodynamic shape and create extra drag.

The front grille of the ID.4 uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The VF 8 doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

As tested by Car and Driver while at idle, the interior of the ID.4 is quieter than the VF 8 Plus (35 vs. 36 dB).

Cargo Capacity

The ID.4 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the VF 8 with its rear seat up (30.3 vs. 13.2 cubic feet). The ID.4 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the VF 8 with its rear seat folded (64.2 vs. 48.4 cubic feet).

Towing

Standard trailer stability control on the ID.4 uses the Electronic Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The VF 8 doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

Ergonomics

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the ID.4 to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The VF 8 doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

The VF 8’s cornering lamps activate a lamp on the front corner when the turn signal is activated. The ID.4 S/S Plus’ standard adaptive cornering lights turn the actual headlight unit up to several degrees, depending on steering wheel angle and vehicle speed. This lights a significant distance into corners at any speed.

The ID.4’s power mirror controls are mounted on the armrest for easy access. The VF 8’s power mirror controls are embedded in the infotainment system, seriously distracting drivers who have to adjust them while driving.

The ID.4 S/S Plus has standard massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the VF 8.

The ID.4’s Park Assist Plus can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The VF 8 doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Model Availability

The ID.4 is available in both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The VF 8 doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

Recommendations

The Volkswagen ID.4 outsold the VinFast VF 8 by almost 126 to one during 2023.
